Sustainable Apiary Management Using Nucleus Colonies (Nucs)

Bob is a presenter for the Ohio State Beekeepers Association traveling speaker program. Learn the basics of what a nuc is and how and when to make a nuc for a sustainable apiary program. Understand how to use a nuc for swarm control, backup queens and to hedge against winter losses.

Beginning Beekeeping Course
The 2019 class will be held Wednesdays in February on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. Doors are open at 6:30pm for check in and light refreshments. Instruction begins at 7:00pm and runs until 9:00pm. This course is for anyone interested in learning more about honey bees and can help you decide if beekeeping is for you. Basic honey bee biology and beekeeping techniques, equipment needs, site selection, best management practices, bee diseases and more will be presented. Registration is required. Melanie will talk about seasonal nutritional needs of the honey bee. When do you need to supply additional resources? Learn about the role of pollen and pollen substitute in hive management as well as nectar, honey, sugar syrup and more.

Chris Merkle is a long time member of the Tri-County Beekeepers Association (TCBA), in Wooster, Ohio. Chris is a third generation beekeeper that has kept bees for 47 years. He is the main organizer for TCBA’s live bee and beekeeping display at the annual Wayne County Fair, and is one of the instructors for the association’s Beginner Beekeeping Course. Chris enjoys educating the public about honey bees by speaking at local schools, bee clubs, community events, and he also likes mentoring newbees.
Now that our Spring Fever is in full swing, it’s time to get out there and enjoy our honey bees. This month’s speaker (Chris Merkle) will discuss what’s going on in the beehives right now, and what we can do to help them out. For the package that you just installed, or the colony that survived this winter, Chris will suggest what to look for and give you some options for care.

Oxalic Acid in Glycerin to Control Varroa Mites
Dr. Richard Cryberg, Organic Chemist, Researcher, Beekeeper
Dr. Richard Cryberg received his BS in Chemistry from Iowa State University and his PhD in Organic Chemistry from The Ohio State University. He had a long career in research and development with Diamond Shamrock Crop. and successor companies.
Dr. Cryberg was a beekeeper for a decade in the 1970’s and returned to beekeeping in 2005. He comments, “The difference between my first experience and today is striking due to the massive impact varroa mites have on what is required to keep a hive alive today.”
Dr. Cryberg will talk about the data Randy Oliver has generated and disclosed, to date, on efficacy of oxalic acid/glycerin mixes and guesses as to when it will be registered. He will explain the FDA registration process and the unprecedented consideration for beekeepers to expedite the registration of Oxalic Acid formulations.
