We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Rocky River Nature Center, 24000 Valley Parkway, North Olmsted, OH 44070.

Doors open at 6:30pm for refreshments and conversation. Meeting begins at 7:00pm.

Oxalic Acid in Glycerin to Control Varroa Mites
Dr. Richard Cryberg, Organic Chemist, Researcher, Beekeeper

Dr. Richard Cryberg received his BS in Chemistry from Iowa State University and his PhD in Organic Chemistry from The Ohio State University. He had a long career in research and development with Diamond Shamrock Crop. and successor companies.

Dr. Cryberg was a beekeeper for a decade in the 1970’s and returned to beekeeping in 2005. He comments, “The difference between my first experience and today is striking due to the massive impact varroa mites have on what is required to keep a hive alive today.”

Dr. Cryberg will talk about the data Randy Oliver has generated and disclosed, to date, on efficacy of oxalic acid/glycerin mixes and guesses as to when it will be registered. He will explain the FDA registration process and the unprecedented consideration for beekeepers to expedite the registration of Oxalic Acid formulations.

RRNC Apiary Presentation, Research update, Q & A

Beekeepers for the RRNC apiary will talk about hive health and management practices. They, and other experienced beekeepers, will answer audience questions on what is happening in the hive now and what to be preparing for next. Leo Schirokauer will give us an update on his research on a preventative for American Foulbrood.

Where is your hive now and where does it need to be?

Beekeeper Allyson May, GCBA Treasurer, will discuss hive health evaluation and what beekeepers may watch for to prevent late season swarms. Resources, equipment configurations, food stores and options will be discussed.

Overwintering Honey Bees in Northeast Ohio

Denzil St. Clair, Owner of Queen Right Colonies in Spencer, will discuss all aspects of, and considerations to, over winter honey bee hives in Northeast Ohio. How to prepare, when and if to open hives, what should have been done and what you can still do to prepare.
