March 10: “The Different Races of Bees and Their Characteristics”


March 10, 2021 Monthly GCBA Meeting

Join us Wednesday, March 10 for the monthly membership meeting at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds (19201 E. Bagley Rd., Bldg. 25). Joe Kovaleski is giving the presentation, “The Different Races of Bees and Their Characteristics.” Doors open at 6:30 pm, meeting starts at 7. All are welcome.

About Joe Kovaleski

Joe has been keeping bees for 26 years and is currently managing around 90 colonies. This all started out as a Boy Scout Beekeeping Merit Badge project with his younger son and two hives. Joe teaches beekeeping to Boy Scouts and 4H. He also does presentations for schools, garden clubs, and other beekeeping organizations.

He is an EAS Master Beekeeper, West Virginia Master Beekeeper, Ohio Master Beekeeper, Ohio HAS director, previous EAS director for Ohio, and was awarded Ohio State 2008 Beekeeper of the Year.

Joe, along with his wife Suzan, produces beeswax candles and honey for sale at many fairs and festivals and has won many Bests of Show and blue ribbons in honey and molded wax contests. Recent recognitions include the 2018 West Virginia State Beekeepers Best of Show Award for Extracted Honey, Comb Honey, and Beeswax. Also, the 2018 Ohio State Beekeepers Best of Show Award for Extracted Honey and First Place for Comb Honey and Beeswax.

Joe is currently the Sec/Treas of the Buckeye Queen Producers Cooperative, a founding member of the Heartland Honeybee Bee Breeders Cooperative, member of the Pennsylvania State Beekeepers Association – participating in their queen rearing initiative, and a member of the West Virginia Queen Producers Association, raising queens in the northern panhandle.
