Brood Comb Management
Stephanie Murray is a 3rd year Master’s student in the Department of Entomology at Ohio State University. Stephanie’s research focuses on questions surrounding old brood comb and how it should be managed.
Brood comb replacement was introduced to improve the health and survival of honey bee colonies by removing excess waste and pesticide residues, however, surveys through the Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) point to ambiguous results.
Stephanie will discuss her research project and results of her surveys.

Ann Cicarella, Professional Landscape Designer, Certified Pollinator Specialist and founder of the Cleveland Pollinator and Plant Symposium will bring this topic to life.
Discover the many unique mutualistic relationships between plants and insect pollinators including honey bees, native bees of Ohio, flies, moths, wasps and beetles. Enjoy a fascinating look at how “goods and services” are exchanged between pollinators and nearly three quarters of all flowering plants.

Dave Noble is the apiarist at Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware, Ohio. Dave began his beekeeping career at The Ohio State University Honey Bee Research Lab in the 1990’s. He employs his 24+ years of beekeeping and bee breeding experience to inform his practices as well as guide his educational programs. Dave believes in a bee-centered philosophy of beekeeping; that a better understanding of bee behavior and biology creates better beekeeping practices.
Dave says that success in beekeeping comes from an ability to change your plans. This implies that you have a plan!
Dave will outline how to create an overall ‘plan’ for the year; how to use that plan to make monthly and even weekly plans. He will also discuss at how to change and adapt your plan based on climate, weather and other conditions.

OSBA Traveling Speaker Series, “Sustainable Beekeeping: Queen Rearing for the Hobbyist Beekeeper.” This program will cover the basics of what is involved in queen rearing, considerations for a raising queens in a single apiary, small scale queen rearing tips, and how to incorporate queen rearing as part of a Sustainable Beekeeping Program.
